Feed In Tariffs

Feed in Tariffs (also known as FITs) came into force on 1st April 2010 and will enable homes and businesses to generate income from producing their own renewable electricity and selling the surplus to the national grid. It is a Government guaranteed initiative that now makes it worth your while to produce your own electricity.

The scheme is funded by the electricity generating companies, which are required by law to buy your “clean” energy in order to offset some of the emissions they generate from burning gas and coal.

You generate income and lower your own energy bills, the Government can satisfy its renewable energy obligations, target climate change and become less reliant on other energy suppliers.

It’s a win win situation.

This “Clean Energy Cash Back” system gives 3 financial benefits:

  • A payment for all the electricity you produce, even if you use it yourself (Generation)
  • Additional bonus payments for electricity you export into the grid (Export)
  • A reduction on your standard electricity bill, from using energy you produce yourself (Import)

This scheme will transform the economics behind small scale renewable energy generation and allow very many more people to get involved in green energy production.

Tariff payments are made for the kWh produced and exported and therefore need to be measured – usually using meters. The tariffs can be paid by the same company that supplies your electricity or you can appoint an agent to collect your tariffs for you - Green Gale will be offering a service that will pool all clients energy and therefore maximise the export tariff.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) will be reviewing Feed in Tariffs before the end of 2011 and the new rates could be imposed earlier than March 2012. The current consultation paper is due to end on the 23rd December 2011 and states the new Feed-In Tariffs will be imposed on all installations after 12th December 2011.
